Company

We were buyers before we were a mill.

Sara began as a textile trading business. The mill at Nalagarh came later, in 2006, built to supply a book of customers the company already had. That order — customers first, machinery second — is still how the place runs. The design studio sits inside the plant, and the people who take a brief are a corridor away from the looms that fill it.

How we got here

  1. 2003

    Incorporated

Sara Textiles Limited is registered in New Delhi.

  2. 2006

    Mill commissioned

The plant at Nalagarh starts weaving — a backward integration from trading into manufacture.

  3. 2007

    First export order

The first container leaves for an overseas buyer.

  4. Today

    106 looms

A thousand people across three shifts, and around 500 MT of finished goods a month.

  5. Behind us

    The Sara Group

Family-held and multi-sector, which is what has kept the leadership and the balance sheet steady through thin years.

How we are structured

  • Family-held, part of the Sara Group
  • One mill, at Nalagarh in Himachal Pradesh
  • The design studio is on the same site, not in a head office
  • Corporate office at Noida; registered office in New Delhi
  • Leadership that has not changed hands — the CEO has been with the group for thirty-three years

How we work with buyers

Our buyers are specialty retailers who sell on design. What they want from a mill is not a range sheet but a hand in the development — someone who works an idea through with them, says early what can be woven at the count and the cost a programme has to hit, and brings an alternative back when the first answer is no.

That is what this building is arranged for. The studio sits inside the plant, so a buyer's idea and the loom that has to make it are in the same conversation from the first week. Most of our programmes are developed jointly rather than chosen from a catalogue, and the ones we are proudest of began as something nobody had woven before.
